What Is Fractal Burning? The Art Behind Fractal Flow Designs
If you’ve seen the lightning-like patterns running through a Fractal Flow Designs resin board, you’ve probably wondered:
How are those patterns created?
The answer is fractal burning, also commonly known as Lichtenberg burning.
Fractal burning is a form of wood art in which high-voltage electricity creates branching patterns across timber. The resulting formations can resemble lightning strikes, tree branches, river systems or roots.
At Fractal Flow Designs, these dramatic patterns have become part of our signature aesthetic, combining the natural character of timber with bold resin colours to create one-of-a-kind pieces of functional art.
What Is Fractal Burning?
Fractal burning is a process involving high-voltage electrical current interacting with timber to create branching, lightning-like patterns.
The patterns are often referred to as Lichtenberg figures, named after German physicist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, who documented electrical discharge patterns in the 18th century.
When applied to timber artwork, electricity can create branching channels across the surface.
The fascinating part is that the exact pattern isn’t simply drawn onto the timber.
It develops organically.
Branches split into smaller branches, change direction and interact with the individual characteristics of the timber.
This is one reason every fractal-burned piece looks different.
Why Does Fractal Burning Look Like Lightning?
Nature frequently produces branching structures.
Lightning is perhaps the most obvious example, but similar patterns can be seen in rivers, tree branches, roots and even blood vessels.
Fractal burning can produce a visually similar branching structure.
Across timber, this creates intricate networks of dark channels that contrast dramatically against the natural grain of the wood.
At Fractal Flow Designs, we take that visual effect further by incorporating coloured resin into our artwork.
Electric blues, greens, teals, metallic effects and other colours can transform the channels into something that looks almost like electricity has been captured permanently inside the timber.
Is Fractal Burning Dangerous?
Yes. Extremely.
This is something we take seriously.
Fractal burning involves potentially lethal high-voltage electricity and should never be treated as an ordinary DIY woodworking technique.
The American Association of Woodturners has issued strong warnings regarding fractal or Lichtenberg burning following numerous deaths and serious injuries associated with the practice. (Woodturner)
For that reason, this article is intended to explain the art and finished results, not provide instructions for performing the process.
We strongly discourage anyone from attempting to recreate fractal burning based on online videos or DIY instructions.
From Burn Pattern to Resin Art
Creating the electrical pattern is only part of the visual concept behind our work.
The real transformation comes from combining three elements:
Timber. Electricity. Resin.
Natural timber provides grain, texture and character.
The fractal artwork introduces the dramatic branching formations.
Resin introduces colour, depth and contrast.
Once incorporated into the overall design and carefully finished, those elements work together to create something completely different from a conventional timber board.
The resin can make the patterns appear almost illuminated, particularly when iridescent, metallic or electric blue effects interact with changing light.
This combination has become a defining characteristic of Fractal Flow Designs.
Why Is Every Fractal Pattern Different?
This is one of our favourite aspects of the art.
You cannot expect two pieces of timber to produce an identical visual result.
Timber is a natural material.
Grain structure, density, knots, figuring and other characteristics vary from one piece to another.
The branching artwork also develops differently across each piece.
Then resin introduces another variable through colour movement, pigment effects and the way light interacts with the finished surface.
The result is genuine variation.
No two Fractal Flow Designs boards are exactly the same.
Fractal Burning and Resin Boards
Fractal artwork works particularly well with resin boards because of the contrast between natural timber and vibrant resin.
Depending on the individual piece, you’ll find our fractal artwork incorporated into products including:
- Resin cheese boards
- Resin serving boards
- Resin chopping boards
- Charcuterie boards
- Grazing boards
- Paddle boards
- Gift sets
- Home décor
- Custom timber and resin projects
The objective isn’t simply to manufacture another board.
It’s to turn an everyday piece of timber into something people stop and look at.
Australian Timber Meets Electrifying Art
Fractal Flow Designs is based in East Gippsland, Victoria, where our resin and timber pieces are individually handcrafted.
We work with a variety of timbers depending on the individual project, including Australian hardwoods, acacia, cypress, English oak and Queensland maple.
Every species has its own grain, colour and character.
Rather than trying to hide those natural variations, our designs work with them.
The timber remains an important part of the finished artwork.
More Than Resin Poured Onto Timber
There’s a major difference between simply adding resin to a piece of timber and designing a finished piece where timber, resin and artwork complement each other.
Our approach is deliberately visual.
A resin colour needs to work with the timber.
The fractal pattern needs to become part of the composition rather than looking like an afterthought.
The finished shape, edges and surface need to bring everything together.
That’s where craftsmanship matters.
Why We Call It Electrifying Art
For Fractal Flow Designs, Electrifying Art isn’t simply a marketing phrase.
Electricity is part of the visual identity behind our fractal artwork.
The branching patterns give our pieces their distinctive lightning-inspired appearance, while resin adds another dimension through colour and depth.
It creates a connection between an incredibly powerful force and one of the oldest natural materials used by humans: timber.
That’s the idea behind Fractal Flow.
Natural timber.
Electrical patterns.
Flowing resin.
One finished piece.
Are Fractal Burned Boards Food Safe?
A board intended for food presentation needs more consideration than appearance alone.
At Fractal Flow Designs, our resin boards use BPA-free, zero-VOC resin certified for food-contact applications, according to the resin manufacturer’s requirements.
Customers should always follow the care instructions supplied with their individual board.
Our boards should be hand washed only, kept away from extreme heat and not placed in a dishwasher.
We also recommend avoiding cutting directly across decorative resin areas to protect the finish.
Custom Fractal Artwork
Our fractal and resin work isn’t restricted to cheese boards.
Fractal Flow Designs also undertakes selected custom timber and resin projects.
Depending on the project, this can include larger boards, tables, bar tops, doors, signage and statement pieces.
The scale changes.
The principle doesn’t.
Take the natural character of timber and transform it into something people haven’t seen before.
